![]() These days our department is in the midst of a “slack tide.” Following the retirement of our long-tenured chief executive, while waiting until her replacement begins, we are maintaining stable operations. It is when the currents are neither pulling the bait away, nor drawing it back under the bridge, but instead swirling gently below. Yet there is a particular phase of the lunar cycle when the fishing is particularly good. When someone hauls up a catch, everyone watches and celebrates. And when a predator strikes the excitement is palpable all up and down the bridge. Fish lurk in the currents waiting for hapless prey to cross their paths. Dangling our lines baited with frozen shrimp or little chunks of squid we watch the current carry our bait out and away from us towards the Gulf of Mexico or back towards us under the bridge depending on which direction the tide is moving. One of our favorite spots is the Seven Mile Bridge. My wife and I love to fish the bridges along the causeway that runs 106 miles between Key Largo and Key West. Slack water can reduce underwater visibility, as there is no flow to remove debris such as sand or mud. To determine the time of slack water at less important locations, the time difference between the time of high water at the Standard Port and at that location also needs to be known.įor scuba divers, the absence of a flow means that less effort is required to swim, and there is less likelihood of drifting away from a vessel or shore. Tide tables, which tabulate the time of high and low water, are generally only published for Standard Ports. Slack water can be estimated using a tide table, a tidal atlas or the tidal diamond information on a nautical chart. Slack water, which used to be known as 'The stand of the tide', is a short period in a body of tidal water either side of high water or low water essentially when the water is completely unstressed, and therefore with no rise or fall of the tide and no movement either way in the tidal stream, and which occurs before the direction of the tidal stream reverses.
